Facilities, transport options, and realistic timeframes. We cover accessibility on ferries, parking, and terrain conditions.
Read GuideIreland's islands offer something different from mainland walks. You're not racing. There's no pressure to summit anything. Instead, you're wandering coastal paths, discovering small villages, and taking time to actually notice things — the light on the water, the way stone walls follow the landscape, the sound of waves. We've created these guides specifically for retirees who want to explore these islands without feeling rushed or worried about their fitness level.
Each island has its own character. Inis Mór is the largest of the Aran Islands and it's got real infrastructure — shops, restaurants, accommodation. The walking's gentle and you can break your day into smaller chunks. Dursey Island is quieter and more remote, but the cable car handles the hard part for you. Sherkin Island sits somewhere in between — accessible but still feels like you've escaped somewhere.
The walks we've included aren't technical. You won't need special equipment or experience. What matters is pacing yourself, wearing comfortable shoes, and knowing where you can sit down when you need to. Most of our guides include rest points, water access, and realistic timeframes. We're not interested in fitness metrics — we're interested in whether you enjoyed the day.
